Jolie Paint Serenity Collection

You know I am a huge fan of Jolie Paint, but you may not know that I am the local retailer for the brand. That means I am not only an expert in the application process and the color aesthetics of the paint, I also can help you purchase the exact shade you need for your project. I love the brand because they make the highest quality paints, made to last for years and years, and durable enough to withstand life with children (yes, it’s true!). but the very best part of the paint brand is the gorgeous shades. I can always count on their curated collections to bring my design dreams to fruition.

One of the 2020 collections is called “Serenity”, and I don’t think there is a more fitting title for the times we are living in right now! Your home is your sanctuary (now more than ever), and it’s the perfect time to bring these peaceful shades into the walls of your abode. While it will obviously brighten up and calm your wall spaces, don’t forget about it’s potential for projects you have been wanting to complete. Painting nightstands or your kitchen island can truly change the look of a room.

Some of my favorite shades from this collection are: Dove Grey: A pretty, elegant, and soft shade of grey that can be used for virtually anything! It can show a little bit of beige undertones, and it’s suitable for just about any room. Eucalyptus: It is a soft, understated green, and nothing flashy. It’s very calming and would be gorgeous in a bedroom. The whole collection is inspired by the hues of nature, and the result is simply gorgeous.

Contact me anytime to purchase this paint line, or for help with choosing a gorgeous tone for your next project!

Spring Favorites

“If you’ve never been thrilled to the very edges of your soul by a flower in spring bloom, maybe your soul has never been in bloom.” — Audra Foveo

The glimpses of Spring have arrived, and I couldn’t be happier to see blue skies, and all those pretty blossoms everywhere! Here on our little farm, we are all thrilled to be outside more, and leaving behind the cooped up winter doldrums. I have been diving headfirst into honing our gardens…one of my favorite parts of Spring. Here are a few of my recent favorites as we head into this beautiful season:

-Pretty gardening items: New gardening themed items are such a practical gift or decor idea. I especially love when things are pretty and they serve a purpose. This adorable indoor watering can is the best example; you can use it for herbs or succulents, and it looks beautiful at the same time. And these pretty gloves from Anthro are just $14 and will freshen up even a job like pulling weeds!

-White greenhouse from Little Cottage Company: This is certainly an investment item, but if you love to garden and need a dedicated space to plant, grow, and enjoy the greenery, a true greenhouse is an excellent option. It will look stunning in your yard or on your property, and will provide years of lasting enjoyment! The Colonial Gable greenhouse is just so aesthetically perfect, and would accent any outdoor space.

-Plants and Roses: The David Austin roses are some of the prettiest and most gorgeous varieties especially the Albrighton Rambler. The shade is the palest pink, and I wish I could grow a few acres of them so I can fill my whole house up! :) I also have been growing some herbs like Rosemary and Sage, which are not only practical for cooking, but also perfect as a garnish. There’s no better way to set a pretty table than adding fresh herbs to everyone’s plates (and it smells heavenly!). Lastly, if you’re looking for a festive treat to serve your guests in this weather, try this recipe from Southern Bite:

Ingredients

  • 1 cup sugar

  • 1 cup firmly packed basil leaves

  • 6 cups water divided

  • 1 1/2 cups freshly squeezed lemon juice 6 to 8 lemons

Instructions

  • In a medium sauce pan, muddle the sugar and basil together with a wooden spoon. Add 2 cups of water and cook over medium heat, stirring frequently, until all of the sugar has dissolved. Remove from the heat and allow the basil to steep in the syrup until cool. Once cool strain the simple syrup into a pitcher. Add 4 cups of water and the lemon juice. Stir well. Serve over ice with a garnish of basil and lemon.

A Few Do's and Don'ts for your Home Decor

We have been doing this for several years, so many aspects of home decor come naturally. But when we are working with new clients, I love getting back to basics and reminding myself of the things I’ve learned along the way. Here is a fun little glimpse into that journey, with some do’s and don’ts of decor:

DO pay attention to proportions: This is one of the most important aspects of design aesthetics. An enormous light fixture will dwarf things in a small space with a short ceiling. If you have a lot of oversized items, make sure you have height and space to accommodate them so that your space doesn’t look even smaller. And if you choose oversized lamps, chairs, etc, be sure to make them the focal point in the room so they get the attention they deserve.

DON’T use cheap, small linens and pillows: I cannot emphasize the difference that great pillows and linens can make when it comes to your bedroom and living space. Look for throw pillows that are substantial, that don’t collapse when you lean on them, and that are nicer fabrics like linen and cotton. I love Pottery Barn for pillows that will hold up for years with proper care and usage, but Target actually has a few really nice quality options that are under $25 each, and still look nice, especially if you have small children who are prone to spills or jumping on your couch! When it comes to bedding, Pottery Barn and West Elm really can’t be beat when it comes to lasting, soft bedding that will make you thrilled to come to bed!

DO include pops of color: Even if you really love a neutral palette, a pretty pop of color here and there can make a beautiful visual impression. The color accents don’t need to be drastic or even permanent; a plant, a bouquet, a gorgeous hardcover…they can all add a little spark of fun to any aesthetic from farmhouse to bohemian. Because I personally love taupe, whites, and cream, I love using greenery to give some colorful personality to my spaces (a fiddle leave fig or olive tree are both subtle options).

DON’T underestimate the power of rugs: A lovely, quality rug can enhance the space you’re in, but be sure to get the proportions and measurements just right. Measure the room you’re putting it in, and consider where your furniture is within the area. Make sure it’s truly large enough for a room like a living or dining room, as many people have trouble when they get a rug home from the store, and realize it’s not as large as it appeared when it was rolled up. When you’re shopping for a new rug, also look for high quality materials and a backing that will hold up for years to come.

If you are looking to refresh your personal space or home, please let us know. We would love to help you arrange and redecorate your home, so that it becomes the oasis you dream of!

Cozy Hues for Valentine's Day

What’s better than curling up by the fireside with the ones you love? Not much. As the “day of love” approaches, I wanted to share some of my favorite items that will give your living room or bedroom a cozy and welcoming feel. Even after Valentine’s Day has passed, you will still be feeling all the warm-and-fuzzies with the ones you cherish the most!

-Anthropologie Unicorn Candle: This is such a gorgeous design, and the scent is to die for! The gorgeous rose pink glass is delicately rounded, and is filled with a hand-poured wax. At $40, it’s a little steep for one candle, but it makes a gorgeous gift, and a lovely accent for a coffee table, bathroom counter, or arranged with other items as a centerpiece. It’s available at Nordstrom online, and at Anthropologie online. Add some peonies in a vase for a cheery and romantic look.

-Faux fur ruched throw: This throw has unexpected details like ruching along the seams, and it’s a cool statement piece that’s practical as well. Pottery Barn throws are more expensive than one you’d find at Home Goods, but they also last much longer, and are a more generous size. THIS ONE is sustainably sourced, and is a 60x80 size..perfect to snuggle with your children or the one you love while you read books or watch your favorite movies!

-This fun and youthful heart shaped wreath: Our latest Target find is under $20, and is adorable for a child’s bedroom or for something pretty and fun to decorate your dining room or a large mirror. It’s affordable, and easy to swap out when the holiday is over. Although it’s not as high quality as a piece from West Elm or Pottery Barn, it will last a few seasons. We love the Olive branch faux branches, and the unique floral detail. it’s also perfect if you’re throwing a Valentine’s party.

-Stay Awhile Wood Decor: a true design steal at just $8, this adorable hexagon sign from Hobby Lobby is adorable, and the perfect piece for a bathroom shelf or bookshelf. It’s white, blends in easily, and can work with any type of decor from farmhouse to minimalism. Mix it with some pinks and reds for a pretty and feminine look, and consider gifting it when you’re done if you don’t have a permanent place for it! It makes a perfect gift when paired with some flowers (think housewarming!)

-Chevron velvet pillow: Another Target find that looks high-end, this pillow has gorgeous, Anthropologie-inspired details, and is still under $20! The color is perfect, isn’t too garish or gaudy, and it fits in with any other neutrals like grey or cream. Place it on your bed with a selection of pretty linens (cream or white), or add it to your couch for a pop of color that fits the holiday! It’s even prettier in person, and most of the Target stores have it in stock.

Happy Valentine’s Day!

Featured DIY Tip - Redfin

I recently was honored to share some decorating advice on Redfin, a real estate expertise blog. You can find the full article by clicking HERE, and can read my tip below!

I don’t know about you, but I love a good interior project during these cold wet winters. This DIY project, or as we like to call them around here at Allure with Decor, INC Projects (Inspire N Create) will give your plain walls a fresh new look.Start with a square edge baseboard of 4-10” high and then add 3” strips of wood directly to your textured walls all the way up to the ceiling (as we did here in Sweet Rose Cottage – photo by @betsyblue). Use paintable caulking on all gaps or edges and paint out in your favorite bright white. Instant character to an otherwise plain room.

Thank you Redfin for sharing my design idea! Stay tuned to their site for more expert tips!

Get (and stay) Organized this Year

If you’re working on organizing your home, you may know the three areas that are the toughest to keep tidy: the closets, the pantry, and that dreaded garage! These spaces tend to become “catch-alls”, especially if you have children, and it can be super hard to keep them up as the year wanes on. Here’s how to get a head start on making your home usable, tidy, and how to maintain the clutter-free environment!

Source: Pexels.com

Source: Pexels.com

Start by clearing out the things you don’t use. This seems pretty obvious, but you’ll be surprised at how many things are in the crevasses and closets that you simply forgot you owned. The less items that are in the garage/pantry/closets, the less you’ll need to organize and clean, so it’s a major win to get rid of as much as you can. Begin by actually removing everything, and we mean EVERYTHING. Be sure to ask your family members before you throw all of their things away (ha!). Vacuum, sweep or mop, and scrub away any dirt in grout/hardwood/tile or carpet. You want to start with a very clean and sanitized space so you don’t have to continue moving things in and out repeatedly.

Tackle just one space at a time: It is very easy to get overwhelmed quickly when you start this project. Instead of committing to do every closet in the house, pick just one. Spend a whole day working on the pantry, and allow a few solid days to tackle a large project like the garage. Enlist older children or your spouse to help, but delegate tasks so you’re all not hovering in one tiny space or getting in each other’s way. It actually helps if you can split it up over five weekends or five days to do two days of closets, one on the pantry, and two for the garage. Block out the time and commit to it…you’ll be so glad you did.

Ditch the packaging in the pantry: If you’re used to keeping all the boxes/containers in your pantry, this may sound strange, but the aesthetic and organization that happens when you put your staples and food into glass or plastic bins will motivate you to keep it tidy. It also looks beautiful and cohesive in your space, and allows you to clearly see what you have on hand. We recommend Amazon, Ikea, or the Container Store for inexpensive and durable containers to get your pantry under control. I recently saw a great idea where instead of a spice cupboard, someone used a drawer! They minimized their spices to what they really used and then laid they flat in a kitchen drawer, making them easier to sort, find, and maintain, rather than rifling through a cupboard. Keep cereal, baking supplies, chips, crackers, and kid’s snacks in clear, easy to see containers, and get can racks for things like chicken broth, beans, and veggies. You will also save time by making the pantry more efficient.

In the closets, make a system: If you have children, sort out clothing that is too big or too small, and designate a bin for each. Get rid of things with stains, items that don’t fit, and don’t forget their dressers or wardrobes in addition to their closets. If you’re using the closets to additional toy storage, figure out how to separate out both toys and clothes, so that you have it divided neatly in half (top and bottom, or left and right sides, etc.) If you can afford to, buy matching hangers so that the clothes will hang evenly (and look nicer), and purchase matching plastic bins or drawers for additional storage. If you have a larger budget and a walk-in closet, consider adding wooden shelves to provide more space for baskets and bins for hairbows, belts, hats, scarves, winter wear, etc. If your kids are past the baby stage, cycle seasonal clothes to the garage to free up space and help your children find their current items more easily. If you are organizing your own closet, follow the same steps. You may find that you hardly wear the majority of your closet, and you could donate or consign the nicer items. This purging and organizing will also save you time (which we can all use, right?!), because you will stop searching for missing shoes, certain sweaters or tops, or by being overwhelmed by the amount of clothes/decisions.

-Beautify the storage: As we mentioned, pretty storage solutions will motivate you to keep your things in their place. Ikea has an amazing selection of white totes of various sizes, as well as metal hooks and baskets for hanging storage if your space is small. If you can’t afford a ton of new items, focus on one area at a time, as your budget allows. It is better to fully complete a single space, than to put off all of the closets/messes until you can afford them all. It is also an emotional process, because you will feel more likely to continue if you can “complete” one fully at a time!

Beautiful storage solutions can free up the time you spend cleaning, organizing, and putting things away. This is a principal many people use when they live a minimalist lifestyle, but you don’t have to be a minimalist to appreciate and utilize these ideas! Good luck as you organize and plan out a tidier 2020!

New Year, New Start!

When you set out to pursue a dream, it can be a very lonely path. There will be those who don’t believe in you, and many people who want to tear you down along the way. But it doesn't have to be that way, and that’s what my hope is for the new year! I hope we can all recognize potential in one another as we set out in a new year, and find it in our hearts to not let our own insecurities prevent us from supporting and caring about others and their dreams (no matter how big!). As an interior designer in a small-ish town, I can see how one could feel threatened or jealous when it seems the community is small, or that the customer base is similar, but I truly believe we can all benefit from joining together instead of vying for top spot. I love collaborating with others, appreciating their individual strengths, and offering the wisdom that I’ve gained along the way! Here are a few more ways we can all be more intentional this year:

Source: Pexels.com

-Be thoughtful: Look out for ways that you can help others who may be in your community or even in the same field as you. Keep your eye out for young people whom you could mentor or help get started, encourage those who are just getting started, and bring them a coffee or a note of inspiration as they begin their journey.

-Be Kind: Speak life-giving words. If someone in your field or a similar business comes up in conversation, make a point of saying something positive about them or their work. Look for easy ways to connect people like florists, photographers, or stylists, with each other, so they can help grow their business. Review and rate other vendors on Facebook, share their posts, and include them in your blogs, so they can get credit for their hard work and beautiful efforts!

-Be intentional: Set aside time in your week or month to give back to the community from your own business, even if you don’t get any monetary or physical gain from it. Consider donating time to a charity event, helping raise money for a worthy cause, or lending your talents to someone in a time of need, such as at a funeral or a family event where finances are tight. Whether it’s every Tuesday, where you donate an hour or two to someone, or even just once a month, you will find that giving back truly is the best reward.

As people set out on their big dreams and new goals for the year, be sure to find kindness and encouragement for them as they get started. After all, you’d want others in your corner cheering you on, as well! If you do this, I think you will find others will want to support you too. That’s true community.

Cozy up for Christmas

When I step into the door after a long day, there is nothing I love more than feeling the warmth and comfort of home. Especially at Christmastime, coming home to a cozy (even if it’s not perfectly clean!) living area is one of the best things ever. Not only is a beautiful home aesthetically pleasing, it creates peace for your children and loved ones. I once heard it said that our home is an extension of ourselves, and that certainly holds true for me. I love hosting, planning, and inviting people into our home. Here are a few things that make our home extra comforting:

-A mix of adorable mugs and the best cocoa: I am a big fan of matching mugs, like these cream colored ones from West Elm (find them here), but there is something really nostalgic and fun about getting out special Christmas mugs over the holidays. Most of us have a few collected here and there, but if you don’t, you can get a collection started with these gorgeous ones from Anthropologie (HERE). I like to put all the mugs in a pretty holder, and then place them next to a big pot of homemade cocoa. Here is a perfect recipe:

Ingredients:

1/3 cup unsweetened cocoa powder

3/4 cup white sugar

1 pinch salt

1/3 cup boiling water

3 1/2 cups milk

3/4 teaspoon vanilla extract

1/2 cup half-and-half cream

Directions:

Combine the cocoa, sugar and pinch of salt in a saucepan. Blend in the boiling water. Bring this mixture to an easy boil while you stir. Simmer and stir for about 2 minutes. Watch that it doesn't scorch. Stir in 3 1/2 cups of milk and heat until very hot, but do not boil! Remove from heat and add vanilla. Divide between 4 mugs. Add the cream to the mugs of cocoa to cool it to drinking temperature. (Recipe via Allrecipes)

-Add in a good book and the perfect blanket: There is a reason everyone loves those soft throw blankets…they are great for curling up with the family to watch a movie or read a book, and there are so many options, that you can easily find something to match your decor, or choose a more holiday-themed one for Christmas. HomeGoods is a good place to find throws for under $30, but I especially love the longevity of the ones from Pottery Barn (like this one).

-Light the best holiday candle: Those bath and body works candles are delicious smelling, but there are so many pretty, organic options these days. I love to support small businesses, and Etsy has a large selection of soy candles that are better for you, and that smell wonderful. Most are made with beeswax, and I like to choose ones with balsam or vanilla scents at Christmastime! Here is one of the best ones (click here).

Christmas Toy Drive at the Farm

One of the best parts of the holiday is getting to give back to others. As you know, here at our farm, we are beginning to host events and more…One of the best events we get to host each year is the Christmas Toy Drive. This year’s is the second annual drive, and last year’s was a huge success. The holiday event is a benefit for Salvation Army’s Toy Drive, in conjunction with Channel 12’s Season of Giving. Each attendee brings a toy, and at the end, all of the toys go to children in the community who are needy. I am so excited for this year’s lineup, which all takes place this Monday evening, December 9th. We have the following activities planned:

78337096_10218191892441045_5312434882234810368_n.jpg

Holiday market supporting local business
Horse drawn carriage rides
Explore a fire truck
Face painting
Visit Santa and his elves and take photos
Reindeer visit
Dinner options from Las Palmas
Dessert
Hot cocoa
Music and more!

Rosewood vintage rentals is graciously providing the beautiful furniture pieces we will be using, and we are so grateful. If you are out and about, be sure to lend your business to some of the local vendors who are helping to make this event possible: Las Palmas, Snoball donuts, and Rosewood vintage rentals, among others! Last year, we were able to donate a whole SUV filled with toys to those in need, and we hope to surpass that goal this year.

If you’d like to attend, please join us at the farm this Monday, from 4-7pm!

The Basics of Decorating a Mantel

If you’re someone who is lucky enough to have a mantel in your house, you are likely looking forward to decorating it for the upcoming holidays. However, it may seem daunting to get the proportions and heights right, especially when you want it to look right with the rest of the room. There is a little bit of a science to the placement of things on a mantel, in order to get the most aesthetically pleasing result, and one that you’ll not constantly be wanting to rearrange every time you look at it (because really, who has time for that?!). The mantel can be a centerpiece of a room, and one your eye is instantly drawn to…when it’s done right! Here are some easy steps to getting your mantel ready for the holidays, and all those photo ops that you’ll want in front of it:

-Start with the anchor piece: Your large focal point can also be called the “anchor”. It can be something like a mirror, a large art piece or canvas, or something similar. Ideally, it will be the right proportion of space above the mantel ledge, and will be something neutral that doesn’t need to be changed with every season. Some pieces we love are things like windowpanes (these ones) for something that can easily work with any seasonal decor. Another neutral idea is to place an oversized clock above the mantel.

-Add items to even out the space: The best way to make sure your mantel looks just right is to think about textures, layers, and height. The items on either side of your anchor piece should be similar in size, although they don’t have to be identical. Candle holders/pillars, narrow windowpanes, shutters, or vases are all great options to start with. Again, if you want to make these neutrals like cream, black, or brown, they will be easily morphed into your seasonal arrays.

-Get holiday or season specific: Now is the fun part, but you don’t want to get too cluttery. Add just 2-3 additional items to your mantel to celebrate the season or holiday you want to highlight. For Thanksgiving, this could be some simple branches or leaves, or a small bouquet of wheat sheaves. If you’re decorating for Christmas, consider a simple banner or letters, or a little bit of sparkle (ornaments or candles). There should always be space between your items, so that it’s not a giant clump of decor…you want them to be appreciated and able to be viewed!

-During the rest of the year: When you don’t have a themed display to put together, it’s always a safe bet to include greenery or simple artwork, and always layer! A larger piece or mirror can be placed in the back of the mantel arrangement, and you can layer a smaller canvas or family photo slightly overlapped in front. This will lend depth and interest to your space.

Still stumped on how to make your mantel fit your current space? We would love to help! Contact us today to schedule your consultation for design, event planning/decor, or more!

Entertaining During the Holiday Break

If you’re a parent like me, entertaining others may be the last thing on your to-do list, and it may fill you with anxiety to think about piling people into your home when your kids get out of school. But entertaining doesn’t have to be stressful, and it can truly become a joy…take it from me! Yes, I love decorating and hostessing, but I know not everyone does, and I’ve learned some tips and tricks over the years for creating a place of rest amid the holiday hustle. Here are some ideas for creating memories with your loved ones this season (hint: they don’t have to always be in your house!)

Source: Pexels.com

Source: Pexels.com

-Host a gingerbread decorating party: This one is super simple, although it sounds complicated. Each guest or family brings their own house. The houses can be home-made if they are feeling crafty, or they can find a pre-made one somewhere like Trader Joes or even Target for about $10. One great tip is if you don’t plan to eat your house after you decorate it, you can also hot glue the sides together for maximum hold! This is helpful for little ones who are decorating and who aren’t quite as careful with the glueing. Obviously if you plan to eat your house, be sure to use something like Royal icing to construct it. We do this every year, and I provide all the decorations, such as frosting bags, candy, and other fun little items to make the houses festive. It’s a great way to bring everyone together, and to see all the different designs!

-Walk through a local town to look at lights: This one is the simplest idea of all because you don’t even have to clean your house (wink, wink!). Each year, we do this with friends and family in Ashland, Oregon. We get our favorite hot drink (cocoa), and do a tour of all the prettiest lights in the city. Afterwards, you could host a dessert bar, or simply bid your loved ones goodbye after the tour! Be sure to dress in warm layers. If you want to take it up a notch, use google to locate light trolleys, where you can ride around a city with ease!

-Keep it simple: These days, instagram and Pinterest can make hosting a holiday gathering feel daunting. But a meaningful night doesn’t have to include hand-written placecards. If you are unable or not wanting to cook a huge meal, considering getting take-out, putting it out on a beautiful set table, and tossing all the containers afterwards. With pretty dishes and a houseful of people you love, no one will care that you didn’t do the cooking, truly! You could do a rotisserie chicken from the store, with a heaping salad and a fresh loaf of bread, and make it as beautiful as a home-cooked meal. Pretty dishes and serving platters can amp up something store-bought to something truly memorable.

-Host a day to give back: It can be easy as parents to get caught up in the gift lists and to-do’s, but I know I always try to encourage my kids to focus on others who are less fortunate. I don’t do a perfect job, but it’s important to our family values. Consider hosting a night to pack up gifts for foster children, to volunteer in a shelter or soup kitchen, or to do gift wrapping for the elderly or those who may not be able to do it themselves. This is a really nice way to connect with the people that mean the most to you, and do something truly worthwhile.

Fall Color Schemes and Mood Boards

Have you ever made a mood board? They are an amazing tool, especially if you are decorating for a new season, or re-doing a room in your home. I really like using them when remodeling, or to help me get a more cohesive look for a tablescape or shelf display. Here’s a few tips on making a mood board that you can truly use:

Source: Pottery Barn

Source: Pottery Barn

-Decide what you’ll use your mood board for: There are several types of mood boards, and some are just for aesthetics. An aesthetic mood board would be something that you’d want to look at for inspiration, but may not use practically, or that would include actual items or colors. For example, an aesthetic mood board for a home might include examples of a farmhouse home, textures and colors that the homeowner likes, and a few pieces of hardware that could work with the look. While it may not have tangible products on it that you want to include on your home, it will keep the look foremost in your mind. A practical mood board could include links to products you’ve already chosen or bought, or photos of things you already own. It also works well with paint colors.

-Decide what you want to accomplish with it: Do you want to use your mood board to guide purchasing, to help a client, to keep you on budget, or to stay inspired? These are all great options for using one, and they can truly help every purpose. I have used them for all of these reasons, and when it comes to decorating for a new season, I often let them help guide my purchasing when I’m out scouting for a few new pieces. This season, I am creating some as I decorate for the fall and harvest season, and heading into the holidays. Some of my favorite colors this season are the pretty shades of Terra Cotta, pretty dusty blues, and copper tones, so they have all made their way into my most recent mood boards:

Copper and Mango Wood Bowl: This Pottery Barn find is pricy, but will last for years and years. It will also move through the seasons, depending on how you style it, and I am already dreaming up ways to style some florals inside of it.

This beautiful rug: This stunning rug is also from Pottery Barn, and comes in a gorgeous hue of Terra Cotta, as well as a medium blue/grey. It is thick, substantial, and will really warm up a room with tile or hardwood, making it seem softer and more cozy. Not only that, but it will keep your toes physically warm, too!

This set of beautiful blue vases: Another investment piece, this set of vases is just beautiful. You can buy them separately or together, but we love them when they’re filled with simple eucalyptus or wooden stems. They also look amazing with olive branches.

Looking for something a bit more affordable? This terra cotta pot is under $30, and will bring the look of fall to your porch or backyard. It’s one of our favorite items from Magnolia lately, and it looks just right with a potted mum plant inside of it.

If you’re looking for paint inspiration, look no further than these mood boards from Jolie Paint. The Aussie color scheme is a bit brighter than most of my autumn decor, but they are gorgeous and can help you shape what you want to accomplish in your own home. And, don’t forget that Allure with Decor is a retailer of these stunning paints!

Painting with Jolie Paint

It’s amazing what a coat of paint can do for a room. I have seen such major transformations take place with just a stroke of a brush, and it’s why I always encourage the clients I work with to consider the role that color plays in their home. It can set the mood, tone, and atmosphere like nothing else! This is why I am so excited about the Jolie Home paint that we carry here at Allure with Decor…it’s high quality, goes on beautifully, and lasts for years to come. But when I hand over a gallon of paint, or I prepare to paint a room myself, I know there’s much more than just slapping a color on the wall. Here are my tips for preparing to paint a room or a piece of furniture:

Source: JOLIE HOME

Source: JOLIE HOME

-Gather your supplies: This is crucial the process, and it’s not the time to pinch pennies. By investing in great painting supplies, you will achieve a better and more quality result in the end. Buy the brand-name paint tape, the good brushes or rollers, and the dropcloths that you aren’t sure you need..you will be so glad you did! Once you have gathered supplies, be sure to set aside plenty of time to prep your room or furniture item. Rushing only produces sloppy painting!

-Measure properly: You know they say to measure once and cut twice…well, you usually aren’t cutting anything while painting, but it’s just as important to clearly know how much paint you really need for the area you are covering. Make your calculations based on careful measurements, and always add a little extra to allow for drips, spills, or touch ups (and you may want extra to touch up down the road so that the shade matches perfectly). If you are measuring a large piece of furniture like a hutch or dresser, make sure to calculate the width, depth, and height to ensure maximum accuracy.

-Know what kinds of rollers/brushes you need: If your wall has a very thick texture, you will need a different roller than you would with a more flat or smooth texture. Your roller and brush choices make a huge difference in the appearance of your finished product, and choosing the right ones can even save you money because you will waste less paint. This tutorial on how to choose the right tools is extremely helpful

-Prepare your surface: If you are painting something like a cabinet or a laminate material, you will need to prep your surface. Jolie paint sticks to most items without sanding or prepwork, but it’s important to clean and prepare any surface you are painting, even if it’s just lightly cleaning and drying the area. Always test what you are painting in a small area that is inconspicuous. Another great thing about the paint is it works for both indoor and outdoor projects! You can read all about the FAQ’s on the Jolie website HERE

-Properly ventilate: It’s really important to make sure you have enough airflow and breathability when you are painting any area or item. Although Jolie paint is non-toxic and is also food-safe and baby safe after 14 days of drying, we recommend working in a well-ventilated area and always practicing safety first. Jolie paint is very low-odor, so there should be minimal noticeability, even right after painting.

We are happy to answer any questions about the shades and types of paint we carry, and we would love to help you tackle you next big project!

Back to School Organizing

Most of us here in Southern Oregon are preparing to send our little (or not so little) ones back to school, and I for one cannot wait. While I am always sad to see my kiddos head back and end the sweetness of our summer season as a family, I love getting organized and prepared for a successful school year. In fact, preparing and organizing is one thing that makes our year smooth and fun, and prevents me from having a mommy meltdown as we transition back into schedules and routines. Here are some of the things that I do to get ready for that big day back:

-Order new backpacks and lunch bags: Pottery Barn also has some gorgeous options for little ones, that you can even add their name to or personalize with their initials. If you have tiny ones, I love this cute little unicorn print for something happy and energetic. But for older ones, Amazon has some wonderful and affordable options that are sturdy and also qualify for Amazon Prime and arrive at your doorstep in just a few days. This pretty floral lunch bag is great for preteens or teens, and this one is a great, neutral stripe set the comes with a backpack and a lunch bag! I always try to order them with a week or so to spare, in case they aren’t quite right or they don’t fit my children when they arrive.

-Order the little things: pencil boxes, ice packs, water bottles, and bento boxes are all things that go with those adorable lunch bags and backpacks, and it’s important to label them with their names! You’d be surprised how easily that helps us keep track of the many different items for each child, and I keep a permanent marker in the kitchen for labeling everything. Some mamas I know color code everything with a different color for each kid, and that is a great system too, if your littles like a certain shade (ie: all pink items for one child, all blue for another) It’s always a great system if you have preschoolers or toddlers who can’t read yet. TJ Maxx and Marshalls have tons of these basics in their kitchen sections, for really inexpensive prices.

-Organize the mudroom or hallway: Wherever you tend to group shoes or backpacks can become your command center. I organize our mudroom in our home so that it’s simple to get out the door in the mornings. I use galvanized metal buckets for sports gear like knee pads and jerseys, and sturdy hooks for backpacks, purses, or other hanging items. I also lay out shoes and outfits in advance, when possible. We try to prepare everything the night before, because there is nothing worse than scrambling to find an uniform or missing shoe as we are getting into the car, trust me!

-Coordinate with all the members of the family: Whether you use a whiteboard calendar, or your smartphones, it’s great to have a family meeting before the school year begins. It can really surprise you when the school year gets rolling and you realize that you have double booked days or times, and people need transportation. Laying it all out before the year gets started will prevent misunderstandings and frustrations, especially if you are a working parent. It can also help kids to see the things they’re signed up for and involved in, and how to prevent burnout by not adding anything extra as you adjust to a busy schedule and homework, etc. I also recommend planning a few basic meals (lasagna, healthy soups in the crock pot, sub sandwiches, or easy things like a cheese and meat charcuterie board), and eliminating any extraneous parties or events for the first week..little ones are often very tired from the “newness” and they may need additional sleep.

Turning Summer Days into Memories

It’s no secret that I LOVE summer (see our last blog here for some top notch ideas), but as a busy mom, it can be challenging to slow down and make the most of every day during a hectic season. I have found when I am more intentional about making memories with my family, and I carve out time to be together,  things flow more smoothly. Making memories can be something that we put pressure on ourselves to do, when we should just allow time to simply be together! That’s often all our children want. Over the years, I have learned it’s less about manufactured “activities” all the time, and simply about letting my kids lead and keeping things simple. We are finding joy more and more because of this mindset shift! On our farm, we enjoy some of these simple, easy evenings when the weather gets warm:

-Long walks: Not only are these good for you, they are a great way to bond with your spouse or children. Especially since we have had a smoke-free southern oregon summer this year, walking is one of our favorite ways to spend an evening.

-Lawn movie nights: You don’t have to get too fancy with these, but you can do a projector with your favorite family flick, and add popcorn and some delicious snacks (you can find “movie theater boxes” at the dollar store, and they won’t break the bank).

-Pond fishing and picnics: Although we have easy access to pretty spots from our personal property, there are plenty of options all over our region of Oregon that are just right for a little summer picnic! We recommend bringing along crackers, cheese, fruit, and salami for an effortless and easy meal (and no dishes!).

-Flower picking for beautiful bouquets: There is nothing sweeter than simple little flower crowns. You can make them with daisies, or little tiny clover flowers, and even bring along green floral wire if you have any.

Endless Summer Nights

…And so it begins; my favorite season! Summer! I am such a lover of the sunshine, the cooler, long evenings, and all the things that accompany this unique time of year. Here in my corner of the world (Oregon), we have distinct seasons, but many of them entail…rain. So, when summer rolls around, we are always pretty excited! Here are some of our favorite summer highlight

-Making a fresh peach crisp: I think my mouth is watering just thinking of a fresh crisp! There’s nothing like warm, baked fruit topped with a tasty sugar and oat crumble, and it’s so easy, you really can’t mess it up. If you’ve never made one, you can start with this super easy recipe from AllRecipes, that comes together in just a few minutes. You can throw in some extras like walnuts or almonds to dress it up a little, but all it really needs is some ice cream or fresh whipped cream. We love to use peaches from our personal trees, or ones we buy at our local farmer’s market for the very best results!

-If peaches aren’t your thing, try some easy berry parfaits (yes, even kiddos will eat this healthy and yummy treat!). Start with a base of Organic Straus Vanilla Yogurt, which you can find online and also at our local Co-op here in Southern Oregon, and top it with homemade or store bought granola and fresh berries. It’s super easy to throw it together, and it’s yummy enough for a healthy breakfast, or even a light dessert after a family barbecue.

-Breezy linens: There’s nothing better than changing out my linens from those cozy fleece and flannels to light and crisp linen and cotton sheets and bed coverings. If you are searching out something affordable to change over to, you can check out this set from Target. It’s from Joanna Gaines’ line Hearth and Hand, and they come in several pretty and simple hues. They are also affordable enough for a guest room or a bed that isn’t as used. If you’re ready to invest in sheets for your master bedroom or your family’s rooms, try Brooklinen, which have a generous guarantee, and are well worth the investment. For the perfect bedroom aesthetic, add in a few blossoms in vases to give a pretty scent (we love David Austin roses and Orange Blossoms, for starters!)

-Summer wardrobe: NOTHING beats Free People for the best boho summer pieces. Although it’s on the pricier end, we like their basics, because they last and last. We recommend their long maxi dresses, and their distressed blue jean shorts. Try this gorgeous Saltwater Maxi dress, that’s under $100 and so lightweight and lovely. If you’re wanting something a bit more unexpected, check out a linen romper layered over a bralette or light tee. Lastly, these distressed shorts are under $70 and will take any old band tee or vintage tank to something a bit more fashionable.

Happy summer!

A New Season!

It’s hard to believe, but Spring has come to a close. Between vacationing in England and France, and working on our family farm, this season in our lives has flown by. While our travel time was absolutely dreamy, it’s always nice to be home. When the seasons change, I typically change over decor and inspiration in our personal spaces as well, and this warm weather has me feeling extra inspired. Here’s a few things I’ve been up to…

-Pulling weeds to no end in my gardens: I recently found a helpful article by HGTV that gave me some tips for making this dreaded chore go faster. With our expansive land and garden spaces, there are plenty of weeds to keep me busy! My favorite new tips: to place mulch over areas where there is a lot of blank spaces for weeds to grow and expand, and to carry a mini trowel with a triangular head to really dig out the small weeds before they can spread their seeds!

-Fending off hawks and trimming roses: I definitely find one of these tasks more inviting than the other (I think it’s pretty obvious which one!). We have found hawks trying to prey on our beloved chickens, and one almost got to my favorite, Rosie. I like tending to my heirloom roses much better than trying to ward off the wildlife, and carefully prune them to make sure they grow strong and healthy.

-Changing over my home decor to something lighter: I love things light and bright, especially as the weather gets warmer, and I’ve also added small vases of pink roses to all my tablescapes. I love having access to so many pretty blooms, right outside my own door. I have added in Jolie Marche pillows (we now carry these gorgeous accents) in pretty hues of pink and blue to coordinate and help things feel very cohesive and pulled together. After all, the best inspiration is always found in nature itself. And as a final finishing touch, I have added citrus scented candles. I love finding organic ones, as I am pretty picky about what I bring into my home and around my family, and this one fits the bill perfectly.

Why to Have an Interior Design Budget (and stick to it!)

The word “budget” is one I heard frequently, and usually it’s used in negative terms, but it can truly be a positive idea. Having a budget is something that can eliminate stress, negate conflict in marriages, and keep you on track to meet your financial goals. It can also help anyone you hire, such as an interior designer (like me!), and can really give a clear picture of what you’re wanting and what’s realistic. Without a budget, these things are hard to gauge. Here are five reasons to make and keep your design parameters:

Know what you’re really working with: Sometimes, a client doesn’t realize how much something truly costs. They may under or overestimate a piece of furniture or even how much paint they will need, and it can skew their perception of how much they have to work with. This isn’t their fault, because it isn’t their field of expertise, but it makes it harder for me to help execute their dreams without a clear financial boundary. Having a budget means we won’t get to the end of a project, and run out of finances.

A budget makes sure your true priorities are reached: If you have a major goal of getting a new couch, and then using the rest of the funds to decorate around it, then a budget makes sure you get that couch, and don’t run out before you find the right one. A clear budget lets you or your designer know what you truly MUST have, and how to allocate the funds appropriately.

A clear cut budget also allows to obstacles to come up: If we hit a major snag in your design, such as a structural problem or an emergency, a clear budget will allow for issues and obstacles, and it won’t be a huge crisis to your pocketbook. It’s always great for clients to have a little wiggle room with their finances, and it helps anyone you hire to make sure everything gets taken care of. Sometimes a client also discovers that they don’t love an aspect, or that they want something more pricy than they originally thought, and a budget lets you make those changes without much stress.

Sticking to your budget won’t derail your long term financial plans: If you are currently trying to fund a large remodel, or you are saving up for a purchase (or just making a nest egg), sticking to your budget will help you breathe a little easier, and can get you one step closer to where you hope to be. It also cuts out the stress of loading everything onto a credit card with high interest, or taking out loans you know you cannot afford. You can rest easy when your design project is done, whether you hire someone or DIY, and know that you stuck to the amount you had available!

How to Define Your Design Style

With the rise of social media, design styles are all around us, almost all the time! It’s a different age for both interior designers and people designing their own homes. It can seem overwhelming to truly understand and know your own personal style, when you are shifted by the whims of your feed, but it’s so important. Knowing your personal design style shapes your buying habits, the feel of your home, and the way it makes you feel. It affects our loved ones and the way they feel when they walk into our home. It’s special and unique. Here’s a few ways to figure out what your personal style is, and how to hone it:

-Cruise the aisles of your nearest home store, and see what draws your eye: Sometimes, when you shop, you find out that what you thought you loved isn’t what continually draws you in. If you can, accumulate the things you love into one cart, and snap a photo. It can help you make an inspiration board or mood board, and can solidify the look you are going for.

-Look at where you draw inspiration from: Do you love interior design magazines? Do you enjoy putting together boards on Pinterest? Do you find awe inspiring ideas when you’re in nature (hiking or walking)? These can help guide your design choices, whether they are bold, earthy, or bohemian. Oftentimes, your wardrobe reflects a little bit of your personal taste as well. People who love neutral clothing and staple pieces often also love a minimalist and stripped down design style. Those willing to take more risks usually reflect this in their wardrobe and their home.

-Think about what your home or space is used for: If you want a very cozy feel, with warmth and texture, then a farmhouse aesthetic is likely what you will gravitate to (or least elements of it). If you love entertaining and enjoy modern flair, you may love wide open spaces with accents like marble and gold. It also helps to take into consideration that your taste can change over time. If you have little ones at home, your style may reflect an easier, simpler version of your personal tastes, simply because of the utility of your needs. In ten years from now, you may be able to incorporate things you aren’t able to yet.

-Start with anchor pieces, and work your way out: If you love kitschy items, and you buy a huge gold pineapple at Home Goods, you may have trouble building a room around it. It’s more ideal to start with a beautiful piece of furniture, like a couch or bed, in order to get a clearer picture and prevent yourself from ending up with tons of small, stylish pieces that have no cohesive element. Always start with a color palette, or anchor pieces of furniture in order to solidify your style.
