Christmas Morning Cozy

Christmas morning is something that we all look forward to, but maybe no one as much as us moms (and dads). We love seeing the faces of our children or our loved ones light up as they unwrap gifts and gather together. It is a special moment that I wouldn’t trade for anything! But over the years, I have learned how to streamline and simplify our Christmas decor and the way the morning unfolds, in order to be present in the moment. Here are some of my best tips:

Source: Pexels.com

-Do a breakfast or brunch prep the night before: Of course we all love fresh cinnamon rolls or eggs and fruit, but many of these things can be prepped early on. I recommend cutting any fresh fruit (except bananas) the night before and putting it in a glass snap top container. Add a few drops of lemon juice to prevent any browning, and slice the bananas the morning of, which will keep them from getting soggy in the dish. For yeast or cinnamon rolls, they are easy to do the night before with just the dough or prepped in a glass pyrex, and bake them the morning of so they’re fresh and warm! Even raw eggs can be mixed with chopped veggies, cheese, and heavy cream, and put in a Tupperware overnight to be turned into an easy scramble in the morning.

-Move a trash can into the general gift-opening area, along with scissors! You will be able to really enjoy the gift-opening if you aren’t having to hop up and down a million times to get the things you may need. Of course, you don’t want a trashcan in all your pretty photos, so either use a little basket or tote, or move it out of the frame :)

-Set your table to be the place to gather after or before gift openings: The more comfortable your guests feel, the longer they will linger, and you will get the easy, beautiful and restful morning you long for! I like to layer my table with lots of different textures, and linens that are washable if little ones are going to be dining with us. That way, you don’t need to worry about things being too ‘fancy’ to enjoy. Opt for neutrals, and leave enough space for people to move around and chat. Always have an extra place setting set aside, in case an unexpected guest arrives and needs a place to sit!

-Cue up the playlist: Have friends and family put together some of their favorite holiday tunes before the big day, and put them into a super fun playlist! Have it ready to roll (and put it on repeat) before the festivities get underway, and set the mood with a scented candle, a crock pot of cocoa (add lids to cups for little ones to avoid spills near all the presents), and plenty of pillows or floor cushions for all the people you love!

Christmas at Sweet Rose Farm and other Community Opportunities

Last holiday season, we did a beautiful drive-through event for our annual toy drive, but this year, we are back to an in-person celebration. I cannot wait to host this amazing night in December, where we collect toys to be distributed to little ones and families in need. Our celebration in the past included warm drinks, yummy food, and even a special guest himself, Saint Nicholas! We have even more special surprises in store this year, and are so excited. Please join us on December 5th, here at Sweet Rose Farm to bring your new toys to be distributed in our community, and enjoy a beautiful evening! The event will go from 4:30-6:30pm, and will feature Fat Kid Food Co food truck, as well!

One of the best resources to find out what is going on in our little valley is What to Do in Southern Oregon, which is an event page. It shares all the latest and greatest things for families to do, whether it’s the candy cane hunt at the Commons, or community events like the Jacksonville parade. If you are looking for ways to celebrate the season, it’s perfect!

If you’re looking for additional ways to give back this season, besides the toy drive, be sure to check out the local Salvation Army, which has many opportunities to donate to those in need. One of their biggest needs right now is non perishable food items, which you can donate to them directly or help fund the effort on their WEBSITE.

Set a Cozy Fall Table

As the weather changes and temperatures begin turning, I love the idea of cozying up around the table. The table has long since been the heart of our home, so a beautiful, elegant fall table where everyone is welcome is right up my alley. Here’s my steps to setting a lovely and welcoming autumn meal for the people you love:

Source: Pexels.com

-Start with linens: Layer up some gorgeous linens. Start with a neutral linen or cotton tablecloth, in a taupe or cream hue. Layer it with a table runner in rust or mustard, or another fall color like burgundy, and add some pretty placemats. The right linens are the beginning of a soft look that immediately puts people at ease. If you have a rustic style table that doesn’t work with tablecloths, bring in the softness with some cloth napkins and placemats.

-Add lighting: Candles, lanterns, or soft mood lighting can make a room feel like the right dimensions. It can make a huge vaulted room feel intimate and cozy, or it can brighten up a small space and make it feel bigger. Test out candles and lights to see how they look in the space you have. If you have tiny children around, opt for battery powered candles, so that everyone at dinner can enjoy a safe, stress-free dinner without preventing tiny hands from touching the flames!

-Make an amazing, fail proof recipe that takes all day: And by all day, choose a crock pot or dutch oven recipe that simmers all day and fills your house with amazing smells. We love the classic beef bourguignon by Ina Garten, slow cooked carefully in a real cast iron pot, and served with a crusty bread and bright green salad.

-Welcome everyone in! Serve the dishes out family style, and enjoy time with friends and family around the table. Dinner parties are kinda a lost art, where in the world of Instagram, they have to be ultra fancy or glamorous. We believe even the everyday can be special and meaningful!

Best Southern Oregon Fall Activities

It’s the best time of year around here: the holiday season is about to kick off, and I am so excited. Here in our little corner of Oregon, we have so many fun things to do, no matter your age.  I wanted to put together a little list of the fall-related activities you can do with your family and friends:

-Pheasant Fields Farms: This is one of our yearly stops, and for good reason! I love their adorable carriage, and the delicious treats they have for sale on the grounds. Little ones will love the petting zoo and animal attractions, and it’s really affordable for the whole family. Try to plan it out, since you have to purchase tickets online ahead of time.

-Leonard Orchards: This is the perfect fall activity, and one that you can even snag some delicious apples at in the meantime! Little ones will love climbing ladders and reaching those higher branches, and if you time it right, you can even get some pretty family photos. Leonard is open throughout the week, and their apple varieties make wonderful pies and cakes.

-Bigham Farms: This is a newer farm locally, and they have tons of affordable things to do, like hay rides, and a corn maze! You can buy and choose your own pumpkins there, and enjoy all the things the season has to offer. It’s a little more low-key than some of the other patches, which makes it perfect if you want more of a laid-back time.

-Baking: This is one you don’t even have to leave your house for! Set up a little baking station in your home, and invite your children to join in! Make delicious baked goods like pies, cakes, or pumpkin bread, and invite your loved ones over for a good halloween movie or two. It makes for the perfect cozy afternoon with the people you love most!

Streamline your Back to School Routine:

Heading back to school can be a real eye-opener when it comes to having a routine, but this year has been exceptionally different! For many families here in my little part of the country, our children have been out of traditional school for quite some time because of COVID. Many kiddos are heading back now to in-person school, so it’s time to get back into a routine! Here are my best mom tips to getting back into a smooth routine, and to make your mornings less hectic:

  • Make Ahead breakfasts: Breakfast is the thing that can trip me up the fastest! Whether it’s a new recipe that takes much longer than anticipated, or realizing we are out of milk when we are heading out the door, making breakfast ahead of time makes my mornings much easier. Some of our favorite dishes are baked oatmeal, which like a cross between a cobbler and oatmeal, and it can be warmed up and eaten with a fork or even just on a paper towel. Another favorite is mason jar overnight oats! These can be customized with lots of berries, peanut butter, or even mini carob chips. Check out my favorite recipe here.

  • Making expectations clear: One super helpful thing to do is set little alarms or reminders on Alexa or a Google device to help your kids make transitions and feel less stressed. You can say things like “Set an alarm in 15 minutes” and remind them what tasks need to get done in that 15 minutes (like putting your shoes on, getting jackets or homework, etc). This is really helpful for younger kids, who may struggle to understand long lists of tasks without a sense of how long they will take. Visual lists on the fridge or doors can help, too.

  • Pack backpacks the night before. Make it a family rule that homework be completed (as much as possible, except maybe older students who may be up early studying for tests, etc) the night before. Then, pack backpacks up with all the papers that need to be turned in, books, and supplies the night before. Put lunches in the fridge with water bottles so that everything is cold and ready to go in the morning. Have kids help double check that their sports uniforms, shoes, or outfits are washed the night before and laid out.

  • Sit down as a family to help identify stressors: Sitting down as a family may help you see new ways you can support one another through the transitions of going back to school and/or work after being home or virtually learning for several months. It can be hard on each member of the family, and sitting down gives you all a chance to express your emotions. Be an active listener and try to understand if your children are extra emotional or having a hard time with the newer schedule and routine. Help one another brainstorm ways to help out or emotionally support the changes!

Pumpkins, pumpkins, pumpkins!

Am I being cliche by talking about pumpkins in the fall? Yes. Am I also super excited about pumpkins? Also, yes. I love pumpkins and the fall season, and wanted to share some fun pumpkin related things today! First, the best pumpkin bread EVER, and a secret tip for making it amazing. Then, the best pumpkin decor from Target (because who doesn’t love a great trip to Target!):

Source: PEXELS.COM

Source: PEXELS.COM

Best ever pumpkin bread: I have blended together a few different recipes to make this one, but it’s loosely based on an older recipe from Once Upon A Chef. I’ve made adjustments!

Ingredients:

2 Cups all purpose flour

1/4 teaspoon salt

1 tsp baking soda

1/2 teaspoon ground cloves

1/2 teaspoon cardamom

1 teaspoon cinnamon

1/2 teaspoon nutmeg

1 1/2 sticks of butter

1 1/2 cups sugar

15 ounces canned pumpkin from the store

2 eggs

2 tablespoons granulated sugar and 2 tablespoons cinnamon, set aside

Preheat oven to 325 degrees, and generously grease two 8 x 4 loaf pans. Combine the flour, salt, baking soda, spices, and whisk. In a large mixer, beat the butter and sugar until creamed and fluffy. Add the pumpkin. Mix everything together. Pour into the pans, and then sprinkle generously with cinnamon sugar! Bake for 65-70 minutes. Let cool and turn out onto a cutting board.

And now, onto the cutest pumpkin decor:

Woven Pumpkin: It’s $5! Stock up on these little cuties, and put them…everywhere. I love the neutral texture and color, and the way you can blend them in for something more subtle.

Wooden Pumpkin: This one is only $10, and it’s even more gorgeous in person! Perfect for layering with some cream colored options for a pretty, simple arrangement.

Black Pumpkin: For something a little more unexpected and fun, this matte black one fits the bill. It’s just $5, and makes for a more moody, interesting display!

Front Porch Decor for Fall:

Your front porch is one of the best ways to show off your personal style! It is often the first thing that people see when they arrive at your home, and even if you don’t have a huge porch, you can add small touches that will liven up your door.

-Buffalo print doormat: The layered doormat look is a way to add depth and texture to your entryway. They are really affordable on Amazon, and can be found at most large retailers like Target for under $30. Layer it under a regular doormat, and it can stay there all the way through the holidays with a different mat on top!

-Lanterns: No matter your budget, you can find a gorgeous lantern for fall everywhere from West Elm to Home Goods. Look for a quality, well-made lantern that has a heavy weight and is easy to lift. Well made lanterns feature sturdy seams and real wood or metal frames, and the glass will be well-secured inside the panels. If you want to add some light without actual flames, you can find really realistic LED candles at most retailers to place inside.

-Wreath: We love the Magnolia leaf wreath for a classic, timeless style that never will look dated. If you want something more seasonal, look for burlap details, rust and orange tones and greenery without a lot of extra fluff. Avoid bargain stores for wreaths, and look for good quality greenery so it doesn’t look cheapy. Avoid large bows or sheer ribbons if you can, because these wear out quickly, and don’t last longer than a season or two.

-Plants: You can go with real or faux plants, and they will add a ton to your entry area. I love the look of potted mums, which are easy to take care of, and inexpensive. You can group them together in large quantities to create an impressive fall display, and even add pumpkins in for a more polished look. Costco often has them for about $15 each year, starting in late August.

Preparing for Fall Weather

Although we have entered a wildfire season here in Southern Oregon, I am still looking forward to the beautiful and crisp fall weather that lies ahead. Getting the house ready for fall is something special that I anticipate each year. It is important to me that my family and loved ones always feel welcome in our haven, and fall lends itself perfectly to being cozy and welcoming! Here are a few ways I am getting ready to welcome the new season:

SOURCE: PEXELS.COM

-With the unknowns that lie ahead and the uncertainty of living in a pandemic, our homes have become more important than ever! Knowing we can feel peaceful in them is something special! I start with the entry way. It’s a great time to clear dead leaves, dirt, or scuffs off your doorway/door, so you can start with a clean slate. Since it’s often one of the first things that your guests will see, it’s great to make a good impression. I usually hang a pretty wreath of greenery, and replace any worn-out doormats. Adding touches like a lantern or sign make it feel more put together.

-I then move into the inside. Like I’ve mentioned, a good deep clean really is a great idea when the seasons change, and dusting, vacuuming, and making a nice clean space is always the start of feeling inspired. I get rid of clutter, trash, or things that need to go to Goodwill, and clean before I decide on adding new decor. I also put away anything from the last season that aren’t seasonally appropriate (like spring colored pastels, or candles that aren’t fall scented), and begin rotating in new textures and items. That doesn’t always mean we have to buy new things! I think storing neutral, off season items and rotate them back in when the season changes.

-Lastly, I decide if I need or want to add anything new to my decor. Things like mirrors, candles, and throws can warm up a space without breaking the bank, and a pretty scent is very welcoming. I love the Fireside and Leaves scents from Bath and Body Works for an affordable option, but if you’re wanting something more upscale, try a brand like Voluspa or Anthropologie, and the crackling sound of Woodwick Candles.

Happy Fall!

Decorating with Vases

Vases are one of those pieces that never seem to disappear out of decor rotation. Although the materials change (wood, metal, ceramic, glass) as the styles change, there’s a reason why vases are so beloved. It’s because they are versatile, can be affordable, and are easy to find. Here are a few ways you can bring them into your decor, and use them to maximize your usable pieces, no matter the season!

SOURCE: PEXELS.COM

SOURCE: PEXELS.COM

  1. Invest in good neutral pieces: I know I sound like a broken record, with my love of neutral items, but it’s my secret to stretching a decor budget a little further, and still being able to fill a space without it looking “cheap”. Clients who come to me have a wide range of budgets, from Target to Anthropologie and West Elm, and I like to be able to suit them all!

  2. Invest in a range of pieces that are high-end and budget, so you can mix and match them. You can sneak in a few Target or Amazing items, if your core pieces are beautiful and impactful. If you are looking at some more dramatic items from Anthro or another higher-end retailer, look for ones that you’ll be able to use for years, and that are well-made. Something like these large wicker style floor vases are over $300 for the pair, but they’ll work just about anywhere.

  3. Don’t be afraid to DIY: If you are a handy type, you can DIY really nice vases from Goodwill or thrifting with paint, and spackle for texture. Chalk paint works well for this project, and it’s very easy. Be sure to choose vases with good shape and structure, for the best results. When you DIY a project, you definitely want to make sure it still looks nice and not like a classroom craft! This is a great tutorial on making vases look trendy and more updated.

  4. Use them paired with other items: You know the age old adage of using items in trios still holds true. Often placing some (not all) items in your home in trios can give a balance look to places like the coffee table or the mantle. Vases are a great way to add height or greenery to a simple wall or space that needs the eye drawn upward.

  5. Find a good space to store them when not in use: If you have young children, you know vases are likely to be knocked over or bumped! If this is your season of life, consider putting your more expensive or special vases up higher or storing them until you’re out of the toddler years! It helps to have a safe place for breakable decor, like a higher shelf in the garage or home, for when it’s not in use.

Your local thrift store, decor store, or upscale home store will have vases galore! Tune back in for more tips on incorporating decor at any price point, and let me know if you’d like to schedule an appointment with us to consult on your home!

Streaming Home Design Shows

Inspiration can come from the most unlikely places, but one of the most recent ones that has influenced some interior designers is Netflix and Hulu! There are so many streaming services available now, and so many fun interior design shows to choose from. We have chosen some really interesting ones, in the hopes to get you inspired and…who doesn’t want to enjoy a relaxing show and a glass of lemonade when the temperatures are soaring?

-The Home Edit: Besides being a really fun look into the lives of celebs, we love this show because their concepts for organization and storage are amazing. They think creatively, are into really pretty solutions, and their style is colorful and bright. Each episode is a good length, but not too long, and the hostesses are hilarious and entertaining.

-Tidying Up with Marie Kondo: This one is not as much a decor show as an organizing one, but we love the idea of decluttering and only bringing in pieces that bring you joy. Even if you’re not ready to get rid of the majority of your possessions, you may enjoy the calming feeling of a well-organized home (and Kondo’s overall demeanor is super calming and relaxing, which makes this a great show for winding down at night).

-Dream Home Makeover: is the series from Studio McGee (we get all swoony over their amazing designs, home decor at Target, and their Insta page), and it’s SUPER fun to watch! Their makeovers are incredible and meticulous and filled with gorgeous neutrals (just my style). Look for all the use of textures and lines, and enjoy how cozy it feels!

-Farmhouse Facelift: This is a great transformation show, and we love a great change to a home! Each episode focuses on restoring a historical home, and the hosts are funny and interesting. If you love the rustic, farmhouse style or historical homes, you will love this show (on Hulu).

Using Books in Decor

Books: they’re some of my favorite things, and the best way to spend a lazy afternoon at the lake, or in a hot bubble bath after a long day. I love to read, but books are also a little-known design secret. In fact, if you look at Insta-designers or some of your favorite designers, you’ll see that books often play an oft-overlooked role in many design schemes. Before we get rolling, I will add that one of the best places to get cool books is at thrift stores or Estate sales, but if you want to use the books you own, that’s also cost-effective! There’s no need to buy all new books. Here are four ways I like to use books:

SOURCE: PEXELS.COM

SOURCE: PEXELS.COM

-As a way to add height: Books can be layered underneath photo frames, vases, candles, and other small decor pieces. Just use caution when putting hot candles on top of paper books, but otherwise, they are pretty versatile. Make sure the book you are using is sturdy and large enough to hold the items with a little bit of a margin all the way around. Stack neutral colored books in pairs or trios on a mantle, shelf, or coffee table to add visual interest and raise up other items that look too small alone.

-As a way to add color: you know me, I love a good neutral and french-inspired decor, but you can use books to add a pop of bold color like mustard or blue (I tend to find older volumes of books have solid color covers). If you want to try something more bold, check out examples of decorators using color-coding systems to accentuate colors in their home. It’s really chic and fun. If you want to try something that’s less bold and uses things you already own, flip all your books around and display them with the spines on the inside instead. It creates a muted palette of paper and gives you more of a blank canvas to work with.

-As an affordable way to add content to your rooms: When Christmastime rolls around, I like to put out a bin of holiday themed books. They are not only well-loved by my kids, but they add nostalgia and fun to the room as well. Using books you already own can make a home feel more cozy and lived-in. They are great for filling in space that is empty, without adding a ton of new decor to your home. If all you can find are inexpensive books (think Readers Digest books for $0.10 at a yard sale), you can actually paint them to match!

-As a way to share family memories and a legacy: Displaying your favorite books also gives your home more of a story. You can share them with people who come over, and explain the background of each book you have out or on a table. It’s a really nice way to share some of your favorites, and get your guests and family talking about memories and pastimes! You can also mix in family photo books for something that’s practical and fun.

Stylish Storage Totes for Summer

When it comes to toting around your stuff, you want something that is not only practical, but beautiful! Summer is one of those times of the year when you usually have way more stuff to carry around: beach towels, swimsuits, sunscreen, snacks, and water bottles…the list goes on! Not only are there amazingly beautiful totes available these days, but they are ones that you can use as storage IN your house or room which saves a ton of space! Here are some of our favorites:

SOURCE: World Market

SOURCE: World Market

-Apolis Global: One of our favorite companies, because they also employ women around the world at a livable and sustainable wage. We love that they are sustainable and also make gorgeous products. Their stunning bags wipe clean on the inside, and I’m sure that you have seen them on Instagram. They look beautiful in a mudroom or entryway, filled with fresh flowers, or to store things like extra shoes, towels, or books when you’re not using them for the beach or playdates. It’s rare that a gorgeous bag can double as storage, but it’s versatile and worth the money.

-Amazon market totes: If you can’t quite swing the Apolis totes, check out the dupes on Amazon (just type in market bag dupes) and find them for under $25. To be clear, the quality is not nearly the same, and they are not sustainable, but if you have little kids, you may want something that’s not as expensive to lose or stain. You could also try them out before you make the larger purchase.

-As you know, I am a big fan of market totes and baskets, because they are also able to be used as secondary storage in the off season. I like to load them up with fresh or faux greenery and add them to a counter or entry bench space for a pop of color and texture. If you want to find the best, authentic ones, check out small businesses and creators, or sites like Etsy. They can also be found at places like Estate Sales or Thrift Stores, but they’re pretty popular, so they’re harder to come by. Amazon has a nice version for under $50, if you are just testing out the trend.

-Although storage baskets aren’t something you would take to the beach as easily, they can be used for travel or toting things between houses if needed. They look amazing on the floor or shelves, filled with throw pillows or blankets, or to hide kid’s toys. If you’re looking for a great place to find those types of baskets, check out World Market for affordable pieces that will withstand the test of time. Try to display them in pairs for maximum impact

Making the Perfect Bed Set

Choosing the right bedding can make a huge impact in your bedroom. We love the look of beautiful, layered bedding in neutrals, so that you can easily swap out the colors and style for any changing seasons. Investing in quality items will ensure you’ll be able to use your bed set for years to come. Here are the pieces we think you need:

Source: Pexels.com

Source: Pexels.com

-A quality, all-season down comforter: If you prefer a vegan alternative, there are many polyester alternatives, but an all-season down comforter is a really great investment if you’re comfortable with feathers. Look for one called an “all-weather”, which will stay cool in the spring and warm in the winter seasons. We like the Hotel collection from Macy’s, because they are really well-made and durable through many wash cycles. Remember to follow the instructions on the tag to preserve it and keep it fluffy!

-A duvet cover or quilt: A duvet cover will keep your comforter fresh and clean, but many people opt for a quilt instead of a cover because of the ease of layering. We love the linen collection from Anthropologie, which is pricier than most, but SO beautiful. They have worn-in wrinkles, which means it looks fine without ironing. If you want a pure white, sharper style, look for Pottery Barn’s classic bedding, which is more affordable and made of cotton.

-Shams and pillows: Look for a mix of shapes for visual interest, but try to keep them in pairs, such as two regular shams, and two euro shams (euro shams are for large, square shaped pillows) which layer so nicely and are perfect for watching tv in the evenings.

-A throw blanket: A chunky or textured throw blanket will finish off your bed-set with a polished touch. Pretty grey or taupe is a color that will match any style or decor, and can also move seamlessly into a living room or sitting room area. We love the inexpensive versions from Target, which are under $100 and machine washable!

Things You Should Look for in Furniture

If you’ve been working on changing up your decor, you may be interested in refinishing pieces that you find at Estate sales or online, in order to find high quality items in your price range. If you are looking at secondhand items, you will want to know what to look for, and what to avoid:

Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.

Source: Pexels.com

  1. Solid wood: This is obvious, but solid wood furniture will last much longer than particle board. If you’re unsure if something is solid, look at the seams. Most particle board will have visible “seams” where the laminate covering it is slightly peeling or where wear shows. If you can’t seem to find solid wood items, solid core furniture is great, too, and will last much longer than particle board. Particle board is made of pressed material (similar to sawdust or wood chips, really) that has been pressed and bound together. It is also known as chipboard.

  2. Look for quality craftsmanship: Some things that well-made furniture have are in the details. The hardware is affixed securely, the corners have dovetail (which looks like interlocking fingers) finishes on the inside, and the drawers and cupboards will close evenly and the edges will match. Because laminate cannot be carved, finding detailed carvings in a pretty wardrobe or dresser means it’s real wood.

  3. Be willing to pay more: Solid furniture will cost more than laminate or cheap furniture, and that means it will also last longer. When you buy real wood furniture, you are investing in something that will last for years, versus months. Although real wood will not be immune to water damage, it is much more durable to scrapes, dents, and droplets of water (particle board puffs up and causes large bubbles in the laminate when it becomes wet or damp).

  4. Focus on the things you can or can’t change: If you find a beautiful piece of furniture but don’t love the style or color, focus on the things you DO love, such as the size, durability, the doors or drawers, and realize there are things you can change, such as hardware, color and finish, and distressing. You would be shocked what a great coat of carefully applied paint and sealant can do to a long-lasting dresser or desk. And changing hardware can drastically modernize a piece.

What to Do When Your Style Feels Stale

I have periods of time when I get a little antsy, and want to change up a ton of decor, and others where I am content with how my home or space is. I think we all have waves of inspiration when it comes to decor, and that’s fairly normal! Of course as an interior designer, I feel more inclined to be thinking about design and style more than a typical person, but I also want my home to be a peaceful space where I feel content. It’s always a balance! Today, I want to talk about what to do when you feel like your style doesn’t represent you anymore, and how to handle it:

SOURCE: PEXELS.COM

SOURCE: PEXELS.COM

  1. Figure out if it’s the decor, or if it is something else in your life: Sometimes, we can want to change our decor because something in our lives feels chaotic. I have definitely been there, and have found it’s really healthy to take a few days to assess what is adding stress to your life. Sometimes it’s not decor, but it’s a lack of organization and sometimes, it’s too busy of a schedule or a stressful family situation. Before making drastic decor changes, take a day to breathe and see if there are other factors at play.

  2. If you decide something about your decor is bothering you and you still want to change it, begin with cleaning and decluttering: Purge things you don’t use anymore, put away laundry, and organize things into bins or into storage that you don’t need in that specific room or space. This will give you a nice, neutral canvas to start with, and let you see what you’re working with.

  3. Begin by deciding what color scheme or decor you are going for. If you are struggling to decide what might go together, consider building a storyboard or a Pinterest idea board to find things that you love. Look for common themes in things you “pin”, such as if you always gravitate towards a farmhouse style, or that you love the color blue. If you’re looking to make a large change, consider hiring someone for a consultation and help. Here at AWD, we would love to help guide your choices to build a space that reflects your needs.

  4. Set a budget: If you are on a tight budget, begin looking at what you can use that you already own. If you hate the style of your photo frames or a gallery wall, maybe you can paint them to one neutral color and reuse them, or use chalk paint to cover an ugly nightstand into something more usable. You’ll never regret giving a piece second life with paint, and if you don’t love it, you will be more likely to sell it on Marketplace or Craigslist with a fresh coat! If you have the budget, consider high quality items that will last, from estate sales or higher-end furniture stores.

Changing your decor can feel overwhelming, but that’s where we come in. We love working with our clients to bring their vision to life. Call us today!

Neutrals: the best blank canvas!

Trends fluctuate constantly. The four seasons constantly revolve each year, bringing with them familiar themes and color schemes. For this reason, setting your interior’s stage with tact will pay it forward as you prepare to make transitions through both seasons and trends in decor.

Through the flux, what design element has your back?

Neutrals.

Now before anyone loses their composure thinking we’re divorcing from color, consider these thoughts. You, too, may realize why neutral interiors truly are your best friend.

Neutrals provide a blank canvas for your seasonal tastes.

Maintaining a calmer setting in your interiors allows for a greater range of play with your holiday and seasonal decor. You know your space can handle the added pops of color or textures for autumn or the winter holidays when it begins in a blissful medium. It then becomes the perfect landscape to showcase your seasonal pieces. Or even keep a quietly sophisticated backdrop for those 50th birthday decorations.

You’ll love their versatility.

When your home decor’s “base layer” begins with a neutral palette, there’s a greater ease in swapping out pieces as your tastes or preferences change. When trends introduce their latest offerings, you’ll feel much more confident working in that velvet, emerald settee you had to have when your space’s color scheme has room to easily adjust. The flexibility in how you edit and add drama or flair is endless.

They’re timeless.

Neutrals bring with them longevity. While blush and brass may come and go, grays, whites, and creams always have their place. Let them lead you with class into whatever the year or seasonal trends dictate. They’ll be your constant friend as you make the pivots!

Beautiful Mirrors for Spring

The power of mirrors is one of my favorite things! They can reflect light so beautifully in a space, and make it feel larger and more bright, so they are ideal for areas where you want more room. They also make a huge impact for a relatively low investment, and come in so many different styles! I’ve chosen some favorites below:

Anthro Gleaming Primrose Mirror: I know this one is going to be on the higher price range for some of you, but it is a cult favorite for a reason: its a true investment piece that makes a big statement. I love the traditional gold style, but it also comes in a black toned finish that is delightfully contrasting if you have a house with lots of neutrals. It comes in four sizes, and if you buy the largest one, try it on the floor on a wall for an interesting change. Be sure to anchor it down if you have any toddlers or small children around, so you don’t risk it falling down on someone. If you can’t swing the price tag, there are some really nice dupes at Tj Maxx and Hobby Lobby (links not available for those two retailers).

Magnolia Round Wooden Mirror: For you minimalists or farmhouse lovers, this mirror will totally match your styles. It is very simple with clean lines, but looked great with either one of those styles. It would also fit nicely in with a more classic styled home. If you wanted, you could distress the edges for something more shabby-chic. There’s a ton you can do with it, but it keeps selling out at Target, so you may have to check your local store or turn on notifications on their website so you can snag it when it’s back in stock. For the price, it’s truly a heavyweight, sturdy mirror that will withstand hanging on a wall for at least a few years.

Black windowpane mirror: The windowpane trend has returned, and I love the modern, sleek take on it that I’ve seen around in several online retailers. It’s unique, textural, and adds subtle interest. West Elm is always reliable for really well-made pieces, and this is no exception. This Raven mirror comes in two sizes, and can be styled with plenty of greenery or with lots of different neutral hues like cream, white, and beige. If you wanted to spring for more impact, both mirrors look stunning together.

Ashley Furniture Grey Mirror: You may not think of Ashley furniture when it comes to home decor, but occasionally, they have a nice piece or two that is not their more traditional stylings. This mirror comes in under $300, often goes on sale, and is a really unique shape. The detail at the top is beautiful in person, and the grey will go with any kind of accent furniture; perfect for an entryway or bedroom.

Colors of the Year: Ultimate Gray and Illuminating

Pantone chose two colors for the year 2021, a gorgeous dark gray, and a bright, cheery yellow! They describe it as a “marriage of colors about the human spirit”, and I love the combo. Although I don’t typically combine those exact shades, I love a great neutral gray and a pretty pop of yellow, especially in the springtime. I wanted to highlight some things you can do to bring these shades into your home (even if you don’t choose those exact Pantone hues). We are a distributor for Jolie Paint, so we can also help you choose the shade that best suits your home or style!

-Grey in bedding: This is a fun trend! Anthropologie always has the best bedding around, and they have some really gorgeous gray sets right now, especially this relaxed linen style. I love the oversized, draped-over-the-bed look, and who doesn’t love some extra comforter to cuddle up in when it’s cold? Use one size up than your bed size for extra length on both sides! Find my favorite comforter HERE

-Pop of mustard yellow: I love a tiny bit of yellow mixed with pretty neutrals, and in moderation, it can work as a super elegant pairing. This pillow from Target is inexpensive, and can be a fun way to “try” a new color in your home without committing to something more permanent like paint or furniture. We also love the idea of a mustard throw blanket, a candle, or a frame to introduce the hue into your decor in a subtle way. Look for mustard yellow with an undertone of grey or cream for something soft and usable.

-Gray door: This is a cute and not-as-trendy way to bring in some neutrals to your exterior paint. I have seen lots of pretty examples on Pinterest, but really any shade of gray looks pretty with white trim, and with almost any exterior shade. Accent a gray front or back door with black planters, modernized house numbers, and a fun doormat to keep it interesting!

Space Saving Strategies

There has been a lot of talk in 2021 about cleaning house and getting rid of clutter! We love it. A functional house is often one that is tidy and organized, and that you feel peaceful in. I have come across some awesome ways to achieve more storage space in your home, no matter the size. For those of you with very little storage, these will be particularly helpful, because they free up drawers and shelves!

-Digitize your images: Nothing scares me more than losing photos. It’s every mom’s worst nightmare; to lose images and memories that can never be replaced. That’s why I was so happy to find this mini USB that connects right into an iPhone. Even if you have the Cloud or digital storage, having one additional space where your photos are will give you peace of mind. This little USB is under $20, and can plug right into an iPhone and download your photos on it. I’d recommend keeping one or more copies, and putting one in a safe deposit box or a fireproof safe. You’ll want to update it every six months or so. It frees up storage because you don’t have to keep making tons of prints in fear of losing your Facebook memories or phone photos.

-Tackle box junk drawer: Do you have a junk drawer that makes you crazy? We all have one place where all the random stuff goes, whether it’s an actual drawer, or a cupboard or basket. I saw a great idea for using a tackle box that goes hidden into a cupboard or pantry, filled with the things that you’d normally put in a junk drawer, like: charger cords, scissors, post its, pushpins, paper clips, tape, glue, etc. You will also free up a drawer, which can be precious real estate in a kitchen or office!

-Under the bed bins and organizers: For those who have no room for an extra dresser, under the bed bins are a lifesaver. While we know those are nothing new, we hadn’t seen one that had dividers for shirts before. It’s under $30, and it really can replace or give you a drawer’s worth of space! Find it HERE. You can usually fit 2-3 of these organizers under a queen size bed, which can really improve your ability to store off-season clothes or shoes that are bulky.

-Tight space shelving: I have seen some brilliant little shelves that are built behind a door in a laundry room. Although they are not as aesthetically pleasing to the eye, they can really amp up your storage in a very small space. They also come in wire versions that are very inexpensive, and that can be hidden in a closet or a mudroom wall.

If you are struggling to make your space work for you, please let me know. I would love to brainstorm with you about how to choose furnishings or decor that makes the most of the space you are working with. Please reach out today, and we can get started!

Bridal Themes for 2021

Although we are still in the midst of the worldwide pandemic, many areas are beginning to open back up. So many brides have had to put their celebrations on the back burner because of COVID, but several have decided to pivot their celebrations to something smaller or more intimate, or choosing a creative location that can accommodate the restrictions on venues. It’s been challenging to be a bride in this uncertain time, but I am so impressed with the creativity and innovation that brides are bringing to their wedding days. I wanted to share some of the current wedding trends and colors…if you’re a bride-to-be, maybe you can find some inspiration for your upcoming day!

-Velvet Bridesmaid Dresses: You don’t have to look far to find the year’s trending fabric: velvet is having a major moment. We love the look and feel and the way it adds so much luxury and texture to the photos of your bridal party. If you want some gorgeous options, look no further than BHLDN, Anthropologie’s gorgeous wedding line. They have multiple styles and shades that will work for every member of your party.

-Unconventional Wedding Venues: Because of the limited amount of guests or unusual pandemic circumstances, many brides and grooms are opting for unique venues, such as boats, open air affairs with food carts, or even your own backyard. The need for open air spaces or spread out seating has made church weddings more difficult, as well as indoor, smaller venues. Some states are still restricting the ability to have events with crowds of any size, so creativity can go a long way towards making a new dream come to life.

-Sustainable Weddings: Many brides are more conscious these days with the impact that celebrations have on the environment. Some changes include things like digital-only wedding invitations, using locally sourced produce or farm to table food for catering, and ditching regular favors for things like plants or donations to charity in honor of your guests. Whether it’s something small, such as taking away straws for your reception drinks, or something larger, like using a venue that uses zero-waste policies, addressing your environmental impact is not just trendy, it’s commendable!

-Garland decor: You’ve probably seen the cascading garlands running down long tables, or turned into gorgeous archways. While greenery isn’t anything new, the garlands are more trendy this year. We love the oversized ones for the head tables, draped down onto the floor for extra drama. These kinds of garlands can also be made in whatever style you have for your wedding, including bohemian or farmhouse. You can also use live plants, which is another current trend, especially cactus for those boho brides!
